Gold deposits once gave the river its charm; today it is its landscapes.
At the height of Montenau, the Amel disappears into the so-called Wolfsbusch, a fir and beech forest that extends beyond the borders of East Belgium and reminds us that wolves were native to the Ardennes until the 19th century. Under the protection of the tree crowns, we reach the river that makes its way through the Ardennes massif. Viewed from above, the banks of the Amel radiate an almost perfect picture of calm and serenity.
Over a wooden bridge and small walkways, we head to Thirimont, a hamlet in the middle of a green oasis. Again, we cross a bridge and discover traces of former gold prospecting activities and long-buried dreams of quick wealth. In the silence, one can hear the rustling of the Amel. From afar, the call of a cuckoo sounds. Above us, two buzzards circle. Nature lacks nothing in Montenau.

Be careful, wooden walkways and bridges are very slippery when wet.
Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
