LIGNEUVILLE
We follow the white-red hiking signs of the GR 56 – Amblève variant. We start at the church and go over the "Grande Rue" (N62) towards Malmedy. We walk along the cemetery wall (with a sign pointing to the grave of Monsieur Hawarden) to its end, where we turn right into "Rue Sous Wératché". We walk gently downhill into the Amel valley (Vallée de l'Amblève).
In the valley floor, we first cross the small stream Tièrû and follow the path past a red-white barrier that now leads us further along the natural valley of the Amel.
At the next red-white barrier, we leave the forest and slowly climb through meadows until we reach two beautiful holiday homes on the upper left. These are the first houses belonging to the small village of Thirimont.
After about 400 meters at the junction, we turn right over the "Chemin des Carrières" through the forest downwards again towards the Amel valley. In the hollow, we keep our direction and go straight ahead, gently ascending the "Rue du Vieux Moulin". Very quickly, we come to a barbecue area laid out to the right of us in an old quarry, which is certainly also suitable for a picnic. We follow the narrow road that leads us into the village of Ondenval.
6.3 km ONDENVAL
We turn right and walk towards the church of Ondenval. In front of the church, we continue to the right, following our white-red hiking signs towards Ligneuville and Montenau.
At the second junction to the left – that is the "Rue des Thuyas" – we go uphill until we reach a large farm at the top. Here we turn right into an alley and then follow it downhill again to the road below.
After following the road about 200 meters further down the valley, we meet the Amel again. Immediately after the end of the bridge railing, there is a narrow path turning left downhill.
To our left flows the Amel, and on the right, we see the road coming from Ligneuville and leading to Montenau. Until recently, there was still a strip of forest between, but it has now been completely cleared.
The undergrowth now has free rein and grows unchecked. With the trees, the hiking signs have also disappeared, but you cannot get lost if you always follow the path along the water.
Even where the fence of a horse ranch appears on the left, we continue straight along the valley. Soon we come into a spruce forest again and shortly after find ourselves on the stations of the cross of Montenau Monastery. The St. Raphael Monastery, on whose grounds we stand, allows us to pass through, just asking for quiet and respect. After circling the mighty monastery building, we come up to the road. We turn left into Klosterstraße and follow it left downhill until we cross the Amel again. Behind it, we walk up slightly to the next intersection with a chapel.
4.2 km MONTENAU
We take the road "Zum Bahndamm" which leads left in the direction of Iveldingen. After crossing the RAVeL, we turn right at the next corner into the narrow "Heufeld" street.
After walking past the cemetery, our path turns left at a right angle after about 300 meters and continues to ascend slowly until we reach the main road at the top. We turn right and follow this road downhill, passing the Hallbacher mill. At the next junction – shortly after the Deidenberg village entrance sign – we turn left onto the "Auf der Hall" street.
At the end of the street, we arrive at the N659 and after a few steps to the Amel bridge. A short distance further, we turn left off the main road and continue on "Wolschebach" street. We are at the eastern end of the Deidenberg municipality.
2.8 km DEIDENBERG
We continue on this street and soon leave the last houses of Deidenberg. Down to the left in the valley flows the Amel, and we follow approximately parallel to the stream. In a hollow, we cross the small Meyerode stream, then climb gently and reach the first houses of the municipality of Amel.
Where we meet the main road N676, we turn left and come to the Engelsbrücke over the Amel. Here at the large intersection with the gas station, we have reached today's destination.
2.6 km AMEL
End of the stage in Amel.
