Pleasure tour 22 - 8km

Walking ·

Not at all far from the German border there is an area which is little known, with gentle slopes and elegant houses.

The village of Hauset lies behind you when the trail turns off into the Buchenbusch, a beautifully kept forest reserve and one of the green belts of Aachen right nearby. Yet in spite of that the forest has retained an unspoiled character, so that the very slightest sound in the undergrowth makes you think there's a squirrel or a hedgehog scratching about in the leaves.

Leaving the wood, we walk past the stubble on a wheat field, down to Fossei and the headstream of the Göhl. The route passes beneath the famous Hammerbrücke, which was one of Europe's largest bridge constructions in the 18th century. It was destroyed in the Second World War, and later rebuilt for the high-speed train line.

After the steep climbs and hollows of the valleys, the landscape reveals a new variant: divided up by fences and hedges, built up with trim houses and stud farms, Hauset is a place of which horses have simply become part. On small tracks we circumnavigate the pond and admire the view with which our walk through this authentic East Belgian village is brought to an end.
