The 96 km long circular hiking route "Route of Commemoration" was opened in 2015. It leads to significant sites of war events in the German-Belgian border area, following existing hiking trails in the municipalities of Büllingen, Bütgenbach, and Waimes on the Belgian side, as well as the municipalities of Hellenthal and Monschau in Germany.

Along the way, a total of 30 multilingual information boards explain the historical events related to topics such as the Battle of the Bulge, smuggling, the Westwall, and many other subjects. It becomes clear that the region has been an area of changing history and different border developments over centuries. Border stones, bunkers, and memorials bear witness to this.
Additionally, the route passes through a fascinating and very diverse landscape in the Eifel-Ardennes region. Even though the border towns still belong to different countries, the "Route of Commemoration" is also an expression of the close partnership that connects the people today.
Author’s recommendation
Of course, 96 km is difficult to hike in one day. Officially, the route can be divided into 6 stages. With some planning skills, comfortable day routes of 10 to 25 km in length can be individually arranged. The entire route is marked with the dove of peace, making it easy to find your way back at any time.
