Description
Passing fenced pastures and meadows, the path is also a journey back in time to the former zinc spar mining in Kelmis.
Between pasture and farmland, the view falls on the hill ridges, most of which are covered with forests. Livestock grazes on the meadow floodplains in the valleys. Here we encounter the Lontzen stream, which we follow into the Kelmis forest. At the "casino pond" we join the course of the Göhl for a while.
Because it flows through one of the largest zinc and lead deposits in Europe, the Göhl was doomed. During the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, the mineral resources were extensively mined without regard for fauna and flora. Today the closed mining area has been completely rehabilitated and renaturalized.
This recognized nature reserve can be explored on various hiking trails, where information boards explain the significance of the former Galmei mining for Kelmis and the surrounding area. Afterwards, the route goes uphill to Eyneburg and then enters a truly picture-book forest. At dusk, we reach Lontzen.
