Not one but two histories and languages have shaped Sourbrodt. Down in the valley, the village is thoroughly Belgian. Yet in the station district, its German origin is unmistakable. At the sight of the station building, you can vividly imagine the arrival of a steam locomotive puffing in over the Vennbahn.
At the end of the path, after the last windbreak of spruces, the biotope of the High Fens unfolds. The route leads directly to the Rur, as black as all the streams in the highlands. Around the Venn of Troupa grows a windscreen of conifers. This inhospitable, steppe-like area became a curse for Russian prisoners of war: a Russian Orthodox cross commemorates their desperate fight for survival …
On the way back, the landscapes bear the familiar features found in the comic albums of artist Didier Comès. The illustrator was born here and has forever commemorated this landscape with his talent.
