Venntrilogie: alternatives to stage 3

Stage 3 of the Venntrilogie is currently closed, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to miss out on its charm. We have put together a few suggestions to help you discover the types of landscape that make this part of the Venntrilogie so special. And the best part is: the routes we suggest are fairly short and easy to reach, so you can experience both in a single day.

Discover more of the Hertogenwald
On stage 2, you got to know the Hertogenwald, and stage 3 would initially have taken you further through this landscape. So why not discover Pleasure Tour 24 in the Hertogenwald and keep enjoying this scenery? Along the way, you will also come across a highlight you would not have encountered on the Venntrilogie: the reservoir dam of the Vesdre.
Tip: this is also a good spot to stop for a relaxed break, with a view of the dam wall as well as the lake: ostbelgien.eu/en/fiche/hiking/genusstour-hertogenwald

The classic High Fens scenery and the Cross of the Betrothed
Sweeping horizons, wooden boardwalks and, depending on the season, cotton grass or shimmering purple heathland define this very particular atmosphere. This circular walk starting from Mont Rigi gives you the High Fens exactly as you picture them. The route crosses the Fagne de Poleur and passes, among other things, the Cross of the Betrothed, whose story you can read about in your Venntrilogie guide.
Here is the route: ostbelgien.eu/en/fiche/hikinghautesfagnes/the-mont-rigi-walk-7-2-km

Discovering the cultural landscape of the Fens and East Belgium
After the first two stages in the north of East Belgium, a rest day in Eupen can also be a welcome change of pace. Treat yourself to the local food and drink, wander through the town centre, join a guided tour or visit one of the museums. This way, you get to know the region around the High Fens from a different angle before continuing your Venntrilogie experience with stage 4.

How to reach the High Fens from your accommodation
The best way to reach the starting point of stage 4 of the Venntrilogie or the Mont Rigi Walk is by bus. The E23 express line between Eupen and St. Vith, for example, stops at both the Signal de Botrange and Mont Rigi. Timetables and further details are available at letec.be.

We regularly publish updates on closures and diversions for the Venntrilogie on our hiking route planner.
Our tip: always check the current situation before you set off. That way, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed, carefree walk.
