In the mine 'Am Berg' in Lontzen, lead was mined from 1900 to 1935. At this location the lead was very pure and already came to light at a depth of as little as three metres. As time went on, the miners worked their way down to a depth of 118 metres. So that the lead could be conveyed to the processing facilities in neighbouring Kelmis, a cable conveyor 3015 metres in length was installed above ground in 1908. However, mining was discontinued in 1935. Today, the former mining headquarters building still reminds us of that epoch. It has been converted into apartments, but its outer structure has been preserved in its entirety. Another relic is a wagon that has been preserved on the Lindenplatz in Lontzen. It served to transport the precious raw material up out of the mine into the daylight.
