In the municipality of Büllingen, two streams originate: the Warche and the Our. The GR route from Büllingen to Schönberg impressively connects the two bodies of water.

At the beginning, the hiking route follows the former railway line near Honsfeld, which has been converted into the Ravel cycling path. Initially, one hikes on the "Warche variant" of the GR56 before also taking a section of the "Amel variant." From the small village of Buchholz, the path branches off south towards the impressive Frankenbach valley. Via Manderfeld and Eimerscheid, you reach the high-altitude village of Herresbach. The following valley of the Großweberbach is partly under nature protection. Along a small path beside the campsite area, the endpoint in Schönberg follows, where the Our shapes the village landscape.

    Author’s recommendation

On the riverbank wall of the Our, an interesting plaque describes the Our on its journey from the source at Losheimergraben to its confluence with the Sauer at Wallendorf in Luxembourg.

    Roadbook

BÜLLINGEN - We start at the parish church of Büllingen and arrive at the main road N.632.

On the opposite side of the street, it continues down the "Geissberg." We keep our direction at the next junction and walk along the street "Am Kammerborn." Still maintaining the same direction, we go up the street "Am Hügel." Even here, where the street "Am Hügel" turns right, we constantly keep our direction and continue straight. The narrow street is called "Zur Bannmühle" and leads us over a railway bridge out of Büllingen. We are now on the way to Honsfeld.

To our left in a wide valley floor winds the Warche. In spring, wild daffodils also bloom here, and in summer, you can see the creamy white panicles of the "Mädesüß," which emit a slightly sweet scent.

The GR hiking path initially runs parallel to the RAVeL, then shortly before Honsfeld bends to reach the old railway embankment again. Here we turn left and now walk a section over the RAVeL. Ahead, we see a high stone bridge that crosses the cycling and hiking path. To the right of the RAVeL, the sign "Honsfeld" reminds us that a train used to stop here. A few meters behind the sign, we must leave the RAVeL again by a narrow path on the left. We walk the path running parallel to the RAVeL slightly uphill. At the top of the high stone bridge, the path leads us over this old railway bridge into the village of Honsfeld. Behind the village inn (Cafe Magney) we turn left, pass the school, and continue to the next intersection.

    4.2 Km HONSFELD

At this intersection, we also reach another "hub" of the GR56 network. Exactly here on the corner, straight ahead before us begins the "Amel variant" of the GR56. This leads over Heppenbach, Amel, Montenau, further to Ligneuville and Stavelot.

Our stage today uses the hiking trail of the "Warche variant," so we turn left here at the corner. We continue towards Holzheim, Hünningen, and Buchholz. At the next junction, we turn left again (straight leads to Holzheim). Also, at the next fork, we continue straight towards Hünningen and soon pass under the old railway line (RAVeL). After about 400 meters, we leave the street leading to Hünningen and turn right into an alley. We ignore side paths and continue straight. First, it goes slightly uphill, then somewhat downhill again. Near a holiday farm, we reach the forest edge. We choose the path to the right, leading south; here, loggers were recently at work. To the right of our path, the railway embankment is visible again. We continue straight until we come across an asphalted forest road at the end. Here we reach the main path of the GR 56.

We march to the right under the railway underpass and after 100 meters arrive at the hamlet of Buchholz.

    3.1 Km BUCHHOLZ

On the left by the country road, we see a former hotel. On the opposite side of the hotel, we turn right and are on the forest path into the Frankenbach valley. It is a very beautiful valley through which we now hike almost 3 kilometers downhill.

Where a narrow asphalt path coming from the left meets our path, we must leave the valley. A few meters further is the bridge over the Frankenbach.

3.4 Km Bridge over the Frankenbach

But even before we reach the bridge over the Frankenbach, we now have to turn left and hike steeply uphill on a forest path. Where we come out of the forest at the top, there is a large cleared area. We climb a bit further uphill, then walk along a pasture fence until our path becomes a field path again. At the top, we turn right for a few meters and then soon follow the alley to the left again. As we are used to here in the Eifel, it soon goes back into the valley. In the valley hollow, a bridge leads us over the Dehnenbach, and beyond that, we climb again to the next hilltop. At the end of the alley, we reach the road at the village exit of Hasenvenn, a small hamlet belonging to Manderfeld. There by the country road, we keep right and continue to the next intersection.

    3.3 Km MANDERFELD

Where the N 626 continues in a wide curve to the left, we first go a bit further right towards Igelmonderhof and Holzheim. But after a few meters, we leave this street again and turn left. The narrow street we turned into now slowly rises and soon becomes a field path leading us into the forest. Where a wayside shrine (in the shape of a small tower) stands in front of a forester's hut, we continue straight and take a forest path opposite.

Here it now goes quite steeply downhill until we meet the Medemderbach below. To the left of the ford is a stable bridge that lets us cross the stream on dry feet. At the next junction, we keep left and follow the valley. At a solitary farmhouse, we continue straight over the intersection. Our path now leaves the valley, and after a short but steep climb, we reach the first houses of the small village of Eimerscheid.

    3.7 Km EIMERSCHEID

We follow the GR hiking signs to the left through the village.  At the first junction, we turn right (towards houses 57-71).

At a stone cross (with colorful ceramics) honoring Saint Hubert, we continue right and pass the "Hansen Farm" from 1792. Behind the Hansen farm, we go slightly uphill along an alley. We soon reach a path coming from the right. We follow this for another 100 meters.

Then we turn sharply left and follow a grass-covered path. We stay on this path, which now leads us into the valley. We cross a small stream, the Kolvenderbach, whose valley is a small nature reserve.

After about 100 meters, we come to the Herresbach mill, a former water mill.

Here we turn left into the narrow street and go up until we reach the country road, which leads down to Schönberg. We have to cross this road and continue straight through Herresbach, another charming Eifel village. Shortly before reaching the church, we see a small chapel on the right, built entirely from old tree roots.

    3.3 Km HERRESBACH

We walk a short section along the village street past the church and take the next left turn. The street first leads us along the cemetery and then into the valley of the Großweberbach. Down here, we hike left continuously downhill, staying close to the stream. This beautiful valley is also under nature protection. After passing the campsite "Waldecho" at the valley’s end, we now reach the outskirts of Schönberg and come across the country road N626. We follow it a short distance to the left.

    4.6 Km SCHÖNBERG

End of the stage at the Hotel Zum Burghof in Schönberg.
