Respect nature and enjoy its beauty

East Belgium is an especially diverse natural landscape with rich flora and fauna. To help protect this diversity, we ask you not to leave any litter behind. What's left behind harms nature and wildlife. Here's why:

  • Broken glass, plastic, drink cans and wire in meadows or woodland can be eaten by grazing animals and wildlife, causing serious injuries and illness.
  • Litter left in grass can also end up in mowers, chippers and balers, causing costly damage to local farming.
  • Discarded glass bottles or shards can start fires when exposed to sunlight — a serious risk during dry spells. Carelessly discarded cigarette butts pose the same fire risk.
  • Dog waste left behind can spread disease to other animals, so please don't leave your four-legged friend's mess on pastureland.
  • Litter of all kinds harms the soil in the long term, damaging both farmland and the habitats of natural areas.

The rule is simple: take your litter and your memories with you. This also applies to fruit peel and other seemingly "biodegradable" waste.

Dropping litter in nature is a criminal offence in Belgium and can be punished with fines.

By the way: if you spot illegally dumped waste anywhere in East Belgium or Wallonia, you can easily report it via the FixMyStreet Wallonie portal or app.
