Where can I go hiking with my dog?

Hikes and walks with dogs are possible in most of East Belgium’s country sides.

Nonetheless, the presence of dogs is strictly regulated in the High Fens nature reserve. The goal is to protect nature for the benefit of its plants and animals.

Please pay attention to the signs in situ and check out our informative "High Fens" map, which gives you an overview in which areas of the High Fens dogs are allowed.

This map is available at all tourist information offices  in East Belgium and can be downloaded here.

Dogs are allowed to accompany you on a leash on the following hiking tours (through the High Fens):

Educational Trail Poleur Venn Pleasure Tour: The Fens of Sourbrodt  Pleasure Tour: The Hertogenwald

Dogs are allowed on all GR-long distance hiking paths.

What should keep in mind whilst hiking with my dog?

Dogs must always be on a leash!

In order to choose the right hike, it is important to pick it according to a length that not only fits one’s own, but also the dog’s fitness. This ensures both of you will have a good time in nature.

In order to have a relaxed walk, touristic points of interest like lakes for instance should be avoided on days with a high number of visitors in the respective areas. The hiking route planner Go Ostbelgien provides you with lots of alternative routes.

As dog owners, you are responsible of keeping the paths and hiking trails clean. We therefore recommend you to always carry dog waste bags.

“Welcome to our 24th summer at the Burg-Reuland campsite!”

Three generations, every summer, at the same campsite: it’s a long-standing tradition for the Dutch Hoekman-Melaard family. In Burg-Reuland, at Camping Hohenbusch, they’ve found their second home among the green, rolling hills. In the beginning they used to bring a touring caravan, now they have a well-equipped static caravan. This charming family let us share their wonderful holiday for a day.

The complete route goes from Aachen (in Germany) through East Belgium to Troisvierges (in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) –125 km of cycling fun in three countries! On the Vennbahn you can concentrate your gaze upon the beautiful landscapes and valleys, as you glide past forests, meadows and villages. What bliss!

See inside the oldest and first organic distillery in Belgium!

We are visiting the Radermacher distillery, a family business for six generations making a whole range of products from whisky, rum and vodka to the most fruity jenevers (gin) and liqueurs. Ecological sustainability is a key factor in their operation. Bernard Zacharias is at the helm in the factory and invites us to join him in what he calls “his passion”.
