Walk with information panels
The “Hasselpath” forest area and the surrounding villages of Rocherath and Krinkelt were a key point during the Ardennes Offensive. Fierce fighting between German and American troops took place here in December 1944. The area was also occupied by the 99th U.S. Infantry Division, a unit made up of 10,000 young and inexperienced soldiers who were nicknamed the “Battle Babies” by other units.
Along an 800 m walking trail, which leads into the forest to the left about 100 m after the information panel, nine additional panels bring the history to life. They tell you about the trenches where soldiers took shelter with their machine guns and mortars. Trenches, as well as the remains of earth bunkers, combat positions and field hospitals, still bear witness to the events of that time.
