Have you ever wondered why there are so many hedges in East Belgium? Or what role they used to play for children, animals and the landscape? And what can still be discovered today? The answer can be found in the adventure trail ‘through the hedgerows’, which shows you nature up close. It’s split into two parts, which give you a feel for the wildlife and history of the hedgerow landscape. You can walk these parts one after the other as one big walk or separately as smaller tours.
The section ‘Animals of the Hedgerows’ (about 2 km) invites you to learn, participate and enjoy. Interactive boards explain the wildlife that lives in the hedgerows. There is a puzzle to solve along the way. Can you guess the answer?
The section ’Secrets of the Hedges’ (about 2.5 km) takes you on a journey of discovery through the hedge landscape of Wirtzfeld. Immerse yourself in the history of the East Belgian hedges: learn with all your senses what makes hedges so special – from medicinal plants to a wind machine – and even a bird song station. Highlight: the barefoot trail on the theme of shepherd children – pure nature under your feet.
