The approximately 100-kilometer-long Ourtal Route first leads through the heart of the East Belgian Eifel and then into an untouched river valley deep in the south of East Belgium. Fox and hare say goodnight to each other in the majestic forests along the way. River bends and curves slow down the ride. You can relax and shift down a gear. Lively villages and picturesque farms invite exploration.
You gladly follow the offering. At some riverbank spots, Germany lies just a stone's throw across the cheerfully flowing Our River. Far to the south, the route then runs for a few kilometers through the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The transition is of course as fluid as the Our itself, which does not allow itself to be stopped by state borders in its course. The same applies to the neighborly relationship in the East Belgian tri-border area.
Exchange among neighbors shapes everyday life today more than the border, which was once sealed off, symbolized by the medieval Reuland Castle. It is no coincidence that the modern cultural, conference, and exhibition center of St. Vith, the largest town on the Ourtal Route, is called “Triangel.” The name says it all.
Author’s recommendation
Another tip – shortcut possible - A shortcut is possible between Setz and St. Vith. This divides the circular route into a northern and southern loop. St. Vith is recommended as the ideal starting point for the entire route as well as for the northern or southern loop.
