This twelve-voice American men's choir, described as "the orchestra of voices", was founded in San Francisco in 1978 by tenor and musicologist Louis Botto, and quickly became one of the most productive recording and touring ensembles in the world.
Chanticleer, named after the 'clear-voiced' cockerel in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, was originally founded with the aim of devoting itself fully to the rarely performed vocal music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Today, the repertoire of these exceptional singers spans several centuries, from their roots in the Renaissance to popular music, classical music, gospel and jazz. The desire to continually expand their repertoire is also reflected in the number of commissioned compositions, for which the world's first male choir has called on more than sixty composers.
