‘Best of Wandern’ – East Belgium test centre
It's not always easy to find the right hiking equipment. Hiking shoes and trekking poles, backpacks … How can you find what is right for you? At the High Fens House for Tourism in East Belgium, you can test quality material from many different brands at your leisure and test it under real-life conditions. And it's completely free!
With the right equipment, experiencing fascinating landscapes in East Belgium is even more fun. In our test centre on location, travellers can obtain advice and test the newest outdoor equipment. This way, guests have options they've never even thought about before – for example hiking with trekking poles or renting a modern GPS device including tour software.
There are also high-tech hiking shoes, rain jackets and rucksacks ready for testing. For bad weather, there are weatherproof products such as trekking umbrellas and multi-function jackets on offer. There are child carriers for parents with infants. So now, there's nothing stopping you from enjoying a relaxed walking holiday.
The whole range of products can be put through a series of thorough tests with no strings attached. And this free service is not only for those who are staying in the region on holiday, but also for interested parties who live there. N.B.: Products are not sold at the House for Tourism. That continues to be the responsibility of the business world.
Anyone wishing to hire hiking material for testing needs to go to the High Fens House for Tourism – East Belgium in Malmedy. All the products available in the test shop are on display there. For a deposit of 100 euros, you can hire the material of your choice for a day. The service applies to the day of your hike. Hired material is normally returned to the test centre the next day.

This initiative is provided as part of 'Best of Wandern', a network that has been joined not only by European hiking regions, but also by representatives of leisure sport, including manufacturers, tour operators and the retail trade.
With this partnership, East Belgium is part of a network of reputable tourist regions such as the Ammergau Alps (Upper Bavaria), the Müllerthal region (Luxembourg), East Tyrol (Austria), the North Vosges nature park in Alsace (France), the Radstadt Tauern (Austria), the region of Leipzig, and the Danube Bergland (both Germany). All in all, the cooperation currently has 22 partners.
In all these regions, it's not only equipment that is provided; know-how is exchanged, too. Each 'Best of Wandern' region benefits from the combined know-how about quality measures from several countries – quality measures that are effective and make good sense.
