On the 2nd weekend in September the open monument days are held. Right across Europe on this weekend, thousands of cultural monuments open their facilities for a free visit. This year's theme is "Place for young people" (from children to teenagers).

Belgium's cultural monuments opened their doors for the first time for the journée du patrimoine (open monument day) in 1989. In 1993 the day was extended to days, and since then the event has involved a different topic each year. Sometimes it's about industrial and social heritage, sometimes rural or archaeological heritage, and sometimes military or mediaeval heritage. Since 1994, entry to the monuments has been free.
